There are six main categories of Ningyō or antique Japanese dolls that are covered in this book. They are Gosho (palace dolls), Hina (Girl’s Day), Musha (Boy’s Day), Isho (Fashion dolls and popular culture),Theater dolls, and Health dolls. Most of these dolls were made in the Edo period (1614-1868), Their history is provided within a cultural context and includes their stylistic development. The book is beautifully illustrated with colored photographs of the dolls, many of which have never been pictured before. A lovely and informative book.
